Christmas time is here

So I am now unemployed and no longer a student. It feels pretty awesome. The last few days have been a blur of drinking and baking and watching TV and Christmas decorating and shopping and wrapping and visiting.

Jackie and I signed a lease on Monday so as of January I won't be homeless, which is nice. Our new place is pretty awesome, with a great view of the river valley and lots of storage space. The location is pretty sweet too, I'm going to be two blocks away from my current roommates, so stalking them won't be too difficult.

Our big Christmas she-bang is tonight. There is still lots of prep work required, but hopefully we'll get it all done, and I'll be able to get to visit with a few last friends before I take off tomorrow.

Weeeee! I'm so excited to be going home. I have a caravan of dear friends meeting me at the airport, which is going to be so awesome. And I can't wait to go home. It's been a year since I've made it out to BC and that's just too damn long. I miss my family.

So Merry Christmas folks, who knows if we'll have power out at the Cabin at Christmas, so I may not be updating this while I'm away.

So Happy New Year too.

Posting under the influence

Never a good idea, but I'm doing it anyway. So any grammatical errors are due to the large amount of alcohol I've consumed since I got off work 5 and a half hours ago.

I had something I wanted to say....

But it's gone.

Oh wait.

I left my cell phone at home today, and when I got home there were no messages. This made me feel sad and unloved.

People should call me.

Also, beer is fun, even though it makes you flirt when you shouldn't. Especially with people that you shouldn't. And thank god I didn't have my cell phone or else I would have drunk dialed someone I shouldn't.

Of course if I drunkenly post this, is that any better....

Also isn't it fabulous that the Black Dog doesn't ID me? Cause I had no ID today, but I'm still drunk....so something worked out there.

Awake

It's 7:21 in the morning. And I'm awake. My alarm will not be going off for another half an hour. It's still dark outside. And I'm awake, have eaten breakfast and have a cup of coffee beside me. I'm awake and have already been surfing the net for a half hour.

Even though I know I should be upset that I'm awake. I'm not really. I know that tonight when I leave school at 7:30 in the evening, I'll be annoyed. I'll probably be pretty annoyed in two hours when my first class starts. But right now I'm not. I kind of like the mornings in the winter. I like waking up and drinking coffee when it's still dark out. There's a coziness too. I love how quiet and still the city is. How quiet and still my apartment is. Coffee always tastes better in the fall and winter.

The girls from work came over last night for our traditional Wednesday night fun. We were originally going to drink some wine, do some crafts (like knitting) and watch bad movies. Instead we just drank wine. And got very, very drunk. It was good times. And the mild headache I have this morning was totally worth it.

Cheers!

Hello Internet,

Life has been a little crazy these last few weeks. School is happening, and work is happening, and I seem to be slightly unwilling to give up my drunken ways of the summer, so that's been happening too. I've made many appearances at local bars, so much so that a guy came up to me at Halo on Friday and said he recognized me from my two night stint at the black dog that week. My two bar worlds are colliding, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean if I act like a total idiot at the dog (which I do) I don't want that to impede my cool reputation at Halo! What's a girl to do? (and if you say stop drinking and going out so much, I say that's the wrong answer!)

But seriously, I will be stopping soon. I have my first midterm in a week and a half and I haven't done any of the readings for the class yet. Probably because I consider the class to be a bit of a joke, but still....

Let's see...In awesome news the bar where my wallet was taken called a few weeks ago. They found it! I guess whoever took it, just dumped it somewhere in the bar. It still even had some of the cards in it, but none of the money. Which I'm okay with. The bar people were supposed to send it to me, but I haven't gotten it yet, and they called two weeks ago. Which is making me a little worried. I'm also getting pretty sick of using my passport as id. Sigh. Perhaps it will come this week...

I've also become mildly obessesed with Grey's Anatomy. I finished watching the first season, and I've made my way through half of the second. I've realized that I just really love Sandra Oh, and I'll watch her in just about anything. Oh and I also think the guy who plays George is pretty cute.

I also went to the Danny Michel concert on Friday night before heading out to Halo. A friend's boyfriend's band opened, which was pretty sweet for them. We went to be supportive and I thought they put on a pretty good show. So readers, if you have a chance go check out Five o'Clock Charlie, for they are awesome...Danny Michel is also awesome.

That, dear internet, is all that is really happening with me, well all that I feel like sharing with the masses at least. If anyone wants to hear about the personal absurdities in my life they are welcome to contact me. Sometimes I don't know how the things that happen to me, actually happen, and why they happen to me.

Love,
Tessa

PS: What do you think of the new layout? Is it 'me'? Is it too girly? Or is it just right? I wait for your opionions.

Le vie Boheme! Part deux!

Sorry for the lateness of this guys. The last week has been kind of intense and busy, with school and work and social interaction I haven't had a spare half hour to write this all out. But I want to get it out before I forget it all. Even now my time in Montreal seems like a dream, an awesome dream, but a dream all the same. I was so impressed by the city and how stress free and happy I felt there, that already I don't believe that my time there was real. Isn't that strange? I felt very at home in the city, despite the language barrier and the fact that I know very few people there. The atmosphere and architecture and the laid back nature of everyone around made such an impression on me, that I've already decided that at some point in my life I need to live there.

I ended up driving to Montreal with my cousin Anna's best friend. I met her once before last summer, but we had a lot in common so spending six hours in a car with a virtual stranger was not a problem. We actually both had backgrounds in feminist theory, and were both single girls, so we could cover both shallow and deeper conversation topics. We made it to Montreal in about six hours, even though it should have been less. The route we ended up taking into the city involved a lot of construction and stupid drivers so it added a good hour to the trip. Parking was also a little tricky to find, but we managed. We ended up parking on Doctor Penfield road, which I spent the rest of the weekend calling Dr. Burnt Toast road, mostly due to the Part of our Heritage commercial that featured the good doctor.

We met up with my cousin and her boyfriend and his roommate and all went our for Lebanese fast food (oh so tasty) and cheap beer (somewhat less tasty....). Sadly before we went out the power at the apartment I was spending the weekend at went out. It being a long weekend, the boys were going to be out of luck until the Tuesday. We spent the rest of our time there with one outlet working. It made it a bit tricky for us girls to primp, but with a little team work we managed just fine.

That first night in Montreal we hit a few bars, the last one we ended up at, Rouge, was somewhat sleazy. Yet due to the sleaziness I didn't have to pay for any of my drinks, so it was alright in my books. And I really enjoyed how last call wasn't until 3am, it made for a longer night out. Especially 'cause most nights we didn't end up leaving the apartment until midnight.

I also participated in the traditional drunken eating of Poutine after leaving the bar. I did only have a few bites, cause I wasn't drunk enough to think it would actually taste good or anything, but I still participated in the whole event. It was a good time. I ended up talking about Tess of the D'urbervilles with a man from Oxford for quite a long time, then catching a cab ride home with one of his friends. She was awesome too, she gave me and my friend advice on bars to check out the next night, and wouldn't take our money for our portion of the trip.

The next day, Saturday, us girls headed out to Mount Royale and this awesome little cafe. We drank coffee, ate Brie and people watched. It was a lovely time. The coffee was so good and so cheap, the stuff at Second Cup really isn't cutting it for me anymore. Which is sad. Edmonton definitely needs more little independent coffee shops. Preferably with cute Francophone waiters.

We went out that night to a few more bars and I had my one and only bad Montreal experience. Within ten minutes at the first bar of the evening I had my wallet stolen out of my purse. So there went my money, my id, my metro pass....everything. It meant I wasn't going to be able to go the Oshega festival the next day, and I was going to have a bitch of a time getting on the plane to go home. Fortunately I had taken most of the cash out of my wallet before we left for the bar, so I was going to have enough to eat for the rest of the trip, but it was still a very upsetting experience.

I allowed myself ten full minutes of freaking out after I discovered it was gone and then decided to make the best of the situation. I ended up having a fantastic night that night. I met some wonderful, generous people, had one of the best conversations of my life and discovered a new beer (Murphy's). It was pretty awesome, and a time I think I'm going to treasure for a long time.

On Sunday I went and filed a police report and then just wondered around Montreal by myself. I read in a park for awhile and then went to a cafe and treated myself to some Tiramisu. I had a great time being by myself. I felt much more confident in Montreal than I normally do in Edmonton. I'm not exactly sure why though. Sitting in the park, I felt at home and free. In a way there was a freedom in not having my wallet. I could have been anyone, with no id, and very little money. And I was also really proud at how I handled myself with the whole incident.

The last day in Montreal was pretty relaxed. I went to a friends for tasty breakfast and then just snoozed on the couch until it was time to drive back to Toronto. The drive back was a lot of fun, filled with girl talk, singing along to Arcade Fire and fist pumping. We got back into Toronto around 10:30 that night.

I had to get up hella early for my flight the next day, which kind of sucked. The airport people were particularity lovely though. One can actually get on domestic flights without picture id if you have a police report. My check in agent was especially sympathetic to my plight. She called me dear, and made sure I'd have no problems getting on my plane. I didn't even have to cry like I originally thought I would have to.

My new roomie was kind enough to come and get me from the airport and lend me money for groceries, thanks again new roomie! I did have the most ANNOYING seat mate on the plane ride though. So the trip home wasn't all that great. I was also pretty exhausted, I didn't do much sleeping on my mini vacation. It was worth it though.

And that's my eastern adventure. If you made it to the end of this long narrative I give you kudos!

Fringe! Ack!

The last few weeks have been a blur. This entire summer has been pretty fast now that I think about it. I can't believe August is here, let alone almost over. In a few short weeks I'll be starting my last semester at the U, going back to being part time at the book store, and (hopefully) settled into my newest home. Crazy.

So Fringe is happening which means that work has been a little intense lately. So many weird people are on the Ave. The only thing that makes it bearable is the New Asian Village kiosk. Mmmmm....samosas.....I'm spending too much money there everyday, and I'm sure I'm putting on weight, but I really don't care. The food is way too good.

I'm also moving today which is exciting. I'm only half packed though, which is not as exciting. Packing is such a bore. I'm really hoping this will go smoothly. I'm giving away most of my furniture so the only real thing I have to worry about is my stuff. But as usual I'm discovering that I own a lot more than I thought I did (Where did all these damn books come from?!) Sigh.

Other highlights of the last few weeks have included frolicking around a Walmart for 2 hours with some lovely ladies, rocking out at the Starlight Room to Wolf Parade (and Frog Eyes, who I found to be less rocking), drinking Vodka slurpees on Jenn's Dad's couch, hitting up the Black Dog a few too many times, and planning my trip to Eastern Canada.

So in a few short hours I will be internet-less. So this may be it for now. Fortunately no one actually expects me to update anymore, so I doubt this slightly long absence will be noticed.

Toodles!

Lately in the Tessa-verse

I work too much.

I eat too much crap food when I work too much, and as such have put on a few pounds in the last few weeks. (Which makes me sad/angry. Oh body issues, will you ever go away?)

I read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell in a day

I'm almost done a Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by David Eggers.

I've seen some fun movies, gone to some great restaurtants. Went antiquing and found various racially offensive media materials, as well as a phone in a box. Oh and some nice bikes that I still couldn't afford even though they were barely ride-able.

Edmonton is too damn hot.

The Black Dog is a fabuous place to increase a girls self esteem after she's put on a few pounds.

Drunk Tessa and screen doors do not mix well. Especially a drunk Tessa wearing a fedora.

Someone tried to convince me that there were two Moby Dicks. One by Melville, and the real one (about the whale and Ishmeal...) by Charles Dickens. I made them feel silly, which is bad for the book selling business.

I seem to get winked at and called various terms of endearments more than my co-worker Dave. This makes Dave sad. All he wants is love, y'all.

Risk night is this Thursday! Woo!

Summer Daze

I've gone into hibernation. Or at least tried to. There are a lot of books piled up beside my bed, that have been just begging for me to read them for the last eight months, and there are movies to be watched, and there are only so many hours in a day. But between my stupid job, and my charming co-workers making me be social, I haven't gotten to nearly as many books that I should have.

Of course the fact that I have 4 books started at the moment hasn't stopped me from going to the library 5 times a week and getting more. That and the influx of great books coming into the store and I really am never going to finish all of the books I want to by the end of the summer.

Oh well.

I'm sure school will be a breeze in September, it being my LAST SEMESTER EVAH after all. I'll probably get to the New Years resolution books then....

In other news I have some very pretty plants, and the herbs I planted have started to sprout. It's all so very exciting.
