Tessa's Recipe for depression:

Step 1: Read Blindness for two hours at a downtown coffee shop attached to the library. When book gets to be too much stare out window at the homeless people. (Helps to be reading the chapters where the criminals take over the asylum and demand payment for food...)

Step 2: Go see Children of Men.

Step 3: On way home from movie listen to Leonard Cohen and watch couple in front of you berate the people asking for spare change.

Sigh.

So I had a good night last night. Despite it's dismal take on the future I really loved Children of Men. It was the best movie I've seen this year (which is pretty amazing since I recently saw Pan's Labyrinth and Painted Veil... and I really loved Little Miss Sunshine.)

So, um, go see it. Just maybe don't be sad when you walk into the theater...

I could not agree more! Children of Men is by far the most thoughtful and compelling film I've seen...maybe in YEARS! Maybe since GATTACA, even.

Have to say, I am really looking forward to seeing 'Venus' at the Princess this weekend. Got to love the bittersweet movies.

I read Blindness a little after I read Deafening because it seemed like a neat theme thing to do. NOT THE SAME. Not the same at all. Blindness was very, very depressing and not enjoyable enough in any other way to make up for it. I liked The Day of the Triffids better.
